Closest place I can pan for gold?
I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. The closest place is a well known stream thats been over hunted and strictly known for placer gold from glaciers retreating. What this means is that there is basically no gold.
Im looking for a place thats within 3-4 hours or up to half a day driving distance thats known to produce good size nuggets. I know I probally wont find one of these, but anywhere thats been known to produce steady flakes wouldnt hurt either. Does anyone know of a good area within half a days drive from SW Ohio? |

Join the Gold prospector Club, they have sites, I think, members can use..John Purcell, used to find gold in the Dayton area. He was from Tipp City. That sucker had a pouch that had to have gone ten pounds if it weighted one.If you can find any of his hunting buddies. They might know where he was sucking with that 4 inch dredge..Time frame early seventies..The best gold machine now is the Tiger Shark, and even there , the beaches are getting hit hard.. No more finding $650 in small rings in an hour............... cordially Nad

Michigan has squat, glaciers moved it all out. Best to go to the NC SC Georgia area. There was a 27 pound nugget found in SC in colonial times.

Um...negative. I personally have panned for gold in the black sands on Lake Superior and found placer and flour gold in several streams with just a sluece box and a shovel. Additionally, the Ropes mine in the UP found quite a significant quantity, and people still find some color there to this day. So don't be hatin' on Michigan. We have gold up here...you just need to know where to look. You won't get rich panning it, but you won't get skunked either if you know where to go. The GPAA (Gold Prospectors Association of America) in Michigan also has a place in Alma (30 acres) that you can pan if you are a member, and people find color there too as well. |

My old roommate's dad has a farm out in Mansfield, we went camping up there over the summer and on a hunch I brought some old panning stuff I got when I was in Arizona. Found a creek out there and found some color. Nothing to get excited about, but it was there. Also I found a buffalo nickel that was dug up. The ODNR has a geological survey out that shows the glacier lines. Good Idea to look this up and base where you go on that. \http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/OhioGeolo...3/Default.aspx
